Headline: Seniors Make a Splash in Farewell Swim Meet: Reflecting on the Lessons Learned

By: A’naya Jones

As the cheers echoed through the pool deck and the last strokes cut through the water, the final swim meet marked not just the culmination of an athletic season but a poignant farewell for many seniors bidding adieu to their competitive swimming careers. Amidst the adrenaline-pumped atmosphere, this event served as a canvas for profound lessons and reflections, mirroring the essence of a block of instruction encompassing valuable insights from “Multimedia Storytelling for Digital Communicators in a Multiplatform World” by Seth Gitner.

The swim meet, a culmination of dedication, perseverance, and team spirit, encapsulated the essence of storytelling beyond the confines of words and visuals. Gitner’s teachings resonated profoundly as I witnessed the swimmers’ narratives unfold through their graceful dives, powerful strokes, and unwavering determination. This real-world experience served as a living testament to the principles elucidated in the textbook, where storytelling transcends traditional mediums and permeates every facet of human expression.

The seniors, adorned in their team colors, embarked on their final lap in the competitive arena. As they sliced through the water, each stroke seemed to echo the chapters of their personal narratives—stories of relentless training, unwavering commitment, and camaraderie forged in chlorine-scented waters. The textbook’s emphasis on the multifaceted nature of storytelling was vividly apparent as these narratives intertwined with the collective story of the team, creating an emotional tapestry that resonated with everyone present.

Moreover, Gitner’s exploration of multimedia storytelling strategies found resonance in the diverse elements of the swim meet. The amalgamation of visuals, from the synchronized movements of swimmers to the vivid array of team colors, showcased the power of visuals in storytelling. The essence of audio storytelling was palpable in the rhythmic sounds of splashing water, synchronized breathing, and the resonating cheers that reverberated through the venue.

Beyond the competition, the event unfolded as a microcosm of life lessons—of triumphs, setbacks, and the bittersweet embrace of endings and new beginnings. The seniors’ final swim meet not only encapsulated their individual journeys but also echoed the collective experiences of growth, resilience, and the indelible mark left on the team and its legacy.

In conclusion, this block of instruction, enriched by Gitner’s insights in “Multimedia Storytelling for Digital Communicators in a Multiplatform World,” has been a transformative journey. The swim meet served as a poignant reminder that storytelling transcends the boundaries of mediums—it permeates our experiences, shaping narratives that resonate with authenticity and emotional depth. The lessons learned from the textbook were vividly mirrored in the narratives woven amidst the splashes and cheers, reinforcing the profound impact of storytelling in every facet of our lives.

Open Mic In The D

By: A’naya Jones

DETROIT Dec 7 Flowers hosted their annual open mic on the first Thursday on the month located in at 2937 East Grand Boulevard. Flowers allows people from Detroit to be create whether that’s through poetry, art or music. Flowers is welcoming to all and encourages everyone to indulge in the power of words as talented take the stage, sharing their heartfelt verses and captivating stories.

Open mics offer up-and-coming artists a chance to practice performing in front of an audience without having to go through the lengthy and challenging process of acquiring regular music gigs—which is extremely tough to accomplish without expertise or a demo recording. They provide singer-songwriters a platform.

I gained a great deal of knowledge about open mic and how it helps people interact with one another and express themselves during the event. I managed to capture the event by taking images and videos. Hearing so many credible tales and learning about what Detroit has to offer the community.

I also gained significant knowledge about editing TikToks. I had never edited a video before, but I found it to be rather simple. I gained a lot of knowledge about how to edit video, add subtitles, add background music, and choose the appropriate order for the clips to flow together.

All things considered, this was a fantastic experience, and learning about how journalism is expanding to reach wider expectations in life is excellent. In addition, discover the various Detroit community-directed creativity initiatives that support the advancement of civilization.

Across the world support!

By A’naya Jones

Date 10/23/23

“It occur in another country; why should it concern you?” At 7:30 p.m. on October 23, students gathered around the campus of Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Following that, everyone was silent, and lights were lighted in remembrance of the fallen souls which one of the students at the time was asked; ask yourself that question now. The Wayne State Social Justice Society chose to conduct “A Moment For Palestine” in order to raise awareness of the ongoing tragedies in Palestine and to reflect on them. The society was inspired by its objective to promote fairness, awareness, and inclusion of all aspects of society.

A moment of silence is a period of silent prayer, meditation, or contemplation. It is also known as a minute’s silence or a one-minute silence. Commemorating a tragic historical event, like Remembrance Day, or mourning a recent death, a moment of silence is frequently a sign of respect, much as flying the flag at half mast which is why Wayne State Social Justice Society consider doing this.

“When something happened to the Negroes in the South I said, ‘That’s their business, not mine.’ Now I know how wrong I was. The murder of my son has shown me that what happens to any of us, anywhere in the world, had better be the business of all of us.”

Mamie Till

Palestine, officially the State of Palestine, is a state located in the Southern Levant region of West Asia. Officially governed by the Palestine Liberation Organization, it claims the West Bank and the Gaza Strip as its territory, all of which has been under Israeli occupation since the 1967 Six-Day War. In response to the “Free Palestine Movement” debate that has recently surfaced, many people have chosen to remain silent, agree, or disagree. The Wayne State Social Justice Society believed that in addition to educating people about the campaign, it would be crucial to demonstrate support by holding signs and painting the rock.

Students gather early in the morning to paint the rock and get ready for the event later that night. It was an educational and overall really insightful event. Zeena Hussam Khalil, whose family is originally from Palestine, felt privileged to assist with painting the rock. Even though Zeena was born in the United States and was far away from the incident, she discussed her cultures and traditions and the reasons behind her feeling compelled to express solidarity. “We all have one thing in common, regardless of race or religion, and that is that we are humans,” Zeena said.Zeena Hussam Khalil also informed me about her involvement with the “American Friends Service Committee” and how she obtained the material through the Wayne State Social Justice Society. https://afsc.org/news/6-ways-you-can-support-palestinians-gaza

In addition, I saw several students speak out during the event regarding Palestine and share poetry and other materials to encourage students to continue their involvement and activism there. I overheard a young person say, “Since it happened in another country, why should it worry you?” during this period. “I will not stay silent due injustice because then I will be helping those who are wrong,” she said in response to being asked the issue. Thus, I speak up on behalf of those whose lives were stolen and who are voiceless.” Then she held up a quick response code the link sent you to the names of the victims and their story.https://interactive.aljazeera.com/aje/2021/palestine-know-their-names/index.html

I was able to capture the spirit of the occasion through my images from the event. capturing a group photo of everyone with their heads bowed and a heart-shaped candle lighted in the center. Students holding signs and participating together are captured by a medium-sized camera. a close-up of the flags being buried to help symbolize the souls who have been lost. Following the painting of the rock, students are seen laughing and joking at this actionable moment. Finally, I decided to capture a photo of the young woman standing next to the painted rock that was colored in Palestine for Photographer’s Choice.

Handling Law and Ethics

By: A’naya Jones

First Amendment : “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

Each of us is granted freedom by the First Amendment to establish our own moral standards, speak freely about any subject without fear of retaliation or government control, and work with others to share our opinions and potentially bring about change for the benefit of all.

This freedom safeguards our ability to obtain and disseminate news and information, including reviews of restaurants or political viewpoints, as well as news stories that are posted online or televised. People are able to participate in democracy and make decisions by using the information obtained by journalists to vote or petition the government, for example. However, in order to protect others’ safety, dignity, and common decency, we should all adhere to a set of ethical guidelines when posting.

Editing Photos

Editing photos is unethical and extremely risky since you are not accurately capturing the scene when you make changes to a picture. Photo editing can result in unfavorable circumstances, which can then lead to media manipulation and more.Uploading and taking photos is up to you, the subject of the photo, and your legal rights to maintain the authenticity of the image.

There’s a thin line between editing and unethical behavior. For example, two photographers were given the task of editing an image. In one case, the colors of the image were changed to produce an even more striking image. In the other, a picture that never actually happened was made by fusing two images together. The first instance is less obvious because it used color manipulation, even though the second occurrence is obviously unethical. However, since they distort the truth of what happened, both are unethical.

Photographic Violence and Privacy

Viewers are moved emotionally by photographs, so I’ve always believed that media professionals should exercise extra caution when choosing, taking, and utilizing photos. Whether or not graphic and/or violent photographs belong in our news media is one of the oldest ethical arguments in visual journalism.

For photojournalists, it can be challenging to know where to draw the line regarding public privacy, particularly in violent or sensitive situations. Photographing a soldier returning home at a public celebration is not regarded a privacy infringement, however camping outside a private citizen’s home in order to acquire a shot of a returning disabled veteran from combat is. Similar to this, it’s generally accepted that a story needs to feature firing ambulances racing to an accident scene or wreckage free of people. However, before being published, photos of victims with injuries should be thoroughly examined.

An review of 47 U.S. media ethics standards, for example, revealed that while most of them take into account photos, only nine of them tackle a compelling topic: how to handle images of sorrow and violence, such those taken on Iraqi battlefields, after the 2005 London bombings, and following Hurricane Katrina according to Susan Keith’s “Images in Ethics Codes in an Era of Violence and Tragedy” research article.

Changing My View!

By A’naya Jones on October 8th,2023

I discovered via these experiences that you can improve at something by practicing and learning more about it.  You’ll discover fascinating photography strategies in this post that you can use to capture stunning photos fast and simply, as well as information about my experiences taking various photos. Good images are more than just cameras, lights, and the capacity to capture the ideal image, I discovered; they also involve the narrative you’re attempting to convey and the strategies you employ. Even if you believe you know everything there is to know about photography, it is never too late to pick up new abilities or learn new techniques. Everybody has a different method for learning photography techniques. You may learn how to do it by reading this article.

A skill that might enhance your photography is learning technique. It is difficult to perfect, just like any other form of creativity; understanding skills will help you advance and get better at what you do. Photographers with skill are adept at making the best use of their cameras. I learned about the short depth of field when taking my first photograph of my plant, which I inherited from my grandma just before she died away. Normally, I just snap shots without giving it a second thought, but I made an effort to angle them each time to highlight the beauty of the plant. I frequently adjusted my posture or the location of the plant

Every time I took a picture, I was documenting a moment in my life that I was happy and in love with. One of the images I adored was the blurry action shot of my niece jumping with joy. As I look at the image, I realize that I had intended her to remain still, but she continued to move, and the result is the most stunning thing I have ever seen since it captures her being full of life and happy.

During that time, I made the effort to educate myself on the exposure triangle, which consists of ISO, aperture, and shutter speed. This triangle serves as the foundation for photography, much like addition and subtraction do for algebra. I had no notion at first what each phrase meant or why it was crucial to comprehend it. Then I discovered the article “Master The Exposure Triangle with Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO” by Jenn Mishra and Lili Jakobovits, which outlined each of the three. According to the site, “Aperture is likewise indicated in fractions, therefore it’s crucial to remember that the smaller the number the greater the opening. Shutter speeds are expressed as fractions of a second, so 1/50 is a longer length of time than 1/200.” To create a shot or video, you must use the exposure triangle to balance the shutter speed, ISO, and aperture. This allows you to manage how much and for how long light reaches the camera sensor.  However, you’ll need a skillfully balanced blend of technical mastery and an unrestricted creativity to create a piece of “art,” as it were.

 Standard ISOs

  • ISO 50
  • ISO 100

Our Story Evolution

By A’naya Jones on September 26th,2023

History is extremely important since it provides a detailed account of what happened during that period, but we rarely discuss how history is recorded or even transmitted. History is frequently documented through pictures, writing, art, and other means. However, photography has been the most widely used method of presenting history to the public.I read “Inside Reporting – A practical guide to the craft of Journalism” while doing so. Written by Tim Harrower, it has helped to inform me about how photography has altered how we view a variety of things and how a picture can tell a thousand words. Here is what I actually gained from the article, which was beautifully written.

“The eye should learn to listen before it looks.”
– Robert Frank

I discovered while reading “Inside Reporting – A Practical Guide to the Craft of Journalism” that the most crucial element is to appeal to your audience, whether it be through a picture, the article’s title, or the quotes you utilize. We have developed our way of communicating using a number of techniques since, in my opinion, there is no use in telling a tale if no one is going to read it which why we developed these different skills.

As stated in the article, storytellers begin to investigate several effective techniques to tell a tale. “Given an option, readers often favor stories: authentic narrative dramas starring real characters. According to research, feature-style writing tends to be more appealing than conventional, “inverted pyramid”-style newswriting because it has more personality and a “why should I care” approach. ” ( Harrower 21) We can see how much storytellers invested in creating key strategies for connecting with everyone through storying telling in many ways. Readers will always seek reliable, easily accessible facts.

No matter the various cultures, races, or geographical locations, everyone in the community tells a story through photographs and other means to explain that story. Whether it is a story of the truth or a lie, we frequently recognize the significance of story telling as it binds the community together. Overall, “Inside Reporting – A Practical Guide to the Craft of Journalism” really captures the elevation of photo history and its understanding.
